Learn how Fort Wayne earned the reputation as the “Heavy Duty Truck Capital of the World."

About Truck Town – The History of International Harvester in Fort Wayne

Truck Town: A History of International Harvester in Fort Wayne will take you on a journey through time, from their first trucks made in Fort Wayne in 1923, to Harvester’s contributions to the WWII war effort, on to the decades that trucks of all sizes were designed, tested, and engineered in the “Heavy Duty Truck Capital of the World.”

Over its  60-year tenure in Fort Wayne, International Harvester produced over 1.5 million trucks earning Fort Wayne the title of “Heavy-Duty Truck Capital of the World.” While manufacturing volume was important, what really earned this title was the high standard of quality, toughness and innovation of the vehicles being produced by this midwestern manufacturing giant. Among the most legendary was the iconic International Harvester Scout, a rugged four-wheel drive vehicle designed and manufactured in Fort Wayne — a forerunner to today’s SUV — that has since inspired generations of loyal enthusiasts, experiencing a resurgence of popularity today.

Family ties and fond memories combine with the pride that was part and parcel of the craftsmanship of these vehicles. Many of the rugged vehicles designed and produced here, have been lovingly restored by collectors and can still be seen on the road today.
