Where Curious Minds Gather
Darla Contois • March 22, 2025 • 2:00pm • Allen County Public Library
This series kicks off at 2:00pm on Saturday, March 22 at the main branch of the Allen County Public Library in downtown Fort Wayne featuring Darla Contois, lead actress from the Canadian drama series, Little Bird (as featured on PBS in 2023). In Little Bird, she starred as Esther Rosenblum/Bezhig Little Bird, a young woman who, as a child, was taken from her home on the Long Pine Reserve in Saskatchewan by local Child Protective Services. This action, commonly known then as “The Sixties Scoop” resulted in her adoption by an affluent Jewish family in Montreal. When she comes of age, begins a quest to reunite with her birth family and her culture. This role won her the Canadian Screen Award for Best Leading Performance in a Drama Series.
Contois, an Indigenous Cree-Saulteaux actor and playwright from the Misipawistik Cree Nation in Manitoba, will share her family’s personal experience with the “Sixties Scoop”—in most cases, without the consent of their families or tribes—and the lasting effects it still has today.
